The 3rd Act provides retirement lifestyle planning for people want something more than traditional retirement. Since 2008, we have been providing workshops, retreats and coaching for individuals and couples as they transition to their next stage of life, what we call “The 3rd Act.”

The 3rd Act Life Plan is the perfect complement to financial retirement planning, offering your clients a unique opportunity to explore new possibilities and create an inspiring vision for their future. We provide tools and resources to guide participants in creating a 3rd Act filled with active engagement, happiness and purpose.
Depending on the needs and availability of clients, they may choose to participate in group workshops or opt for private coaching sessions tailored to the needs of each individual or couple.

We also offer resources and training materials for Financial Advisors who prefer to work directly with their clients to create lifestyle plans.
Having a clear and inspiring plan for making the best of the time ahead not only informs the financial plan, but also increases the confidence clients have in the financial planning process and in their financial advisor.

Providing your clients with a solid financial plan coupled with an inspiring life plan promotes their health and well being. As your clients age, those who are positive and engaged with a sense of purpose are healthier, happier and live longer. In The 3rd Act workshops and individual sessions, we focus on planning that includes these vital components leading to a vibrant and fulfilling retirement.

Workshop Goals

Clients will achieve these outcomes:

  • Break through traditional views of aging and retirement that limit our ability to create a vibrant and more purposeful life.
  • Address fears of retirement and aging.
  • Explore possibilities for creating a new identity that provides purpose, meaning, and for many a continued income.
  • Identify new ways to use strengths, skills and talents to promote active engagement.
  • Using the principles of Positive Psychology, explore the five components of well-being including purpose, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment.
  • Clarify decisions and next steps for a successful transition from full time work to retirement.
  • Build community with others who are facing the same life questions.
  • Create a 3rd Act plan that provides structure and focus for the future.


  • Participants will receive copy of all materials used during the workshop and a copy of The 3rd Act Workbook to provide an additional resource for continued exploration and planning.
  • We have developed additional resources for our clients that include a monthly newsletter, articles, blog posts, books, speakers, conferences, volunteer opportunities, resources for employment, starting a business, and organizations dedicated to supporting positive aging.

Patricia Cavanaugh MA, MFT

Patricia’s company, The 3rd Act, promotes positive aging through individual and couples coaching, corporate workshops public workshops and retreats for women and couples. Since 2008 Patricia has worked with hundreds of clients guiding their transition to retirement and to a well-lived life. She is committed to helping people discover and develop their hidden potential for a vibrant and more purposeful life their “3rd Act”.

From the mid 1970’s to the mid 80’s, Patricia was instrumental in the development and implementation of the workshop “Money and You” and the Burklyn Business School.
Patricia has a Masters in Counseling Psychology and has been a practicing psychotherapist since 1984. She is also a certified Third Age Coach and serves clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California.

Ellie Klevins

Ellie Klevins MS

Ellie is an accomplished Human Resources leader and Career Coach specializing in guiding people’s success at each stage of their career. As a partner with The 3rd Act ( she leads workshops and retreats to guide people as they plan their transition from full time employment to purposely create the next stage of their lives.

A Silicon Valley native, she has held HR leadership roles in several technology companies. She is a regular presenter on retirement lifestyle planning and was part of the design team for a 9-week Encore Workshop Purpose, Passion and Paycheck, held regularly at the Renaissance Center in San Rafael California.

Ellie received her Bachelor of Science in Human Resources Management from San Jose State University, and her Master of Science in Organizational Development from the University of San Francisco. She is also a graduate of the Coaches Training Institute.
